Ankle pain is often due to an ankle sprain but can also be caused by ankle instability, arthritis, gout, tendonitis, fracture, nerve compression (tarsal tunnel syndrome), infection and poor structural alignment of the leg or foot. Symptoms include swelling, stiffness, redness, numbness or tingling, and burning pain. Common conditions include: Achilles Tenton Rupture: complete or partial tear that occurs when the tendon is stretched beyond its capacity. Ankle Arthritis: joint inflammation that can cause swelling and pain and may eventually lead to deformit or a loss of joint function. Ankle Fracture: partial or complete break in a bone Gout: a buildup of uric acid in the tissues or a joint Osteoarthritis: breakdown and eventual loss of cartilage in one or more joints. Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome: compression on the tibial nerve that produces anywhere along the path of the nerve running from the inside of the ankle into the foot.
